Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can affect the lining of the mouth as well as the skin. The cause is not fully understood and the condition affects up to 2% of the population. Lichen planus most frequently occurs in middle age and women are affected slightly more than men. Although there is no known cure treatment can be given to manage many of the symptoms.
Oral lichen planus affects the lining of the mouth with lesions appearing on the inside of the cheeks, gums, tongue, palate and inner tissue of the lips. They appear as lacy white raised patched, red swollen tender patches of tissue and open sores.
These can cause pain and discomfort especially when talking, eating or drinking, increased sensitivity to hot, acidic or spicy foods and gum inflammation may result in bleeding when you brush your teeth.
Oral lichen planus is not contagious or inherited and is not related to nutrition although be aware of acidic foods as this can make your mouth sore. It is also not cancer. Symptoms can be managed well although some triggers for the disease can include medicines for high blood pressure, pain killers and diabetes. A dry mouth is prevalent in people with oral lichen planus so using XyliMelts is an effect way of quickly alleviating the sensation of dryness, providing lubrication for hours at a time and supporting the oral cavity by reducing the risk of tooth decay, increasing saliva and managing pain.
